Otaru Ryotei Kuramure will reopen under the new brand name \u201cOtaru Retreat Kuramure by Onko Chishin\u201d on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Renovation work will be carried out in phases while the property continues normal operations until the rebranding opening.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This property marks the fifth retreat in the series developed by Onko Chishin, following \u201cSetouchi Retreat Aonagi,\u201d \u201cIki Retreat Kairi Murakami,\u201d \u201cGoto Retreat ray,\u201d and \u201cIzu Retreat Atagawa Suiko.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thoughts Behind the Logo<\/u><\/h3>\n

Drawing on Kuramure\u2019s defining characteristics\u2014its masterful use of natural materials and architecture that harmonizes seamlessly with the surrounding landscape\u2014the new logo reflects environmental elements such as Otaru\u2019s snowy scenery and the continuous forms of the storehouses.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the shape of the roofs, diagonal lines arranged around the lettering symbolically depict their distinctive silhouettes.<\/p>\n

Origins of the Concept<\/u><\/h3>\n

Kuramure, built in the image of Otaru\u2019s stone warehouse district, was conceived as a space embodying the spirit of Japan under architect Makoto Nakayama\u2019s design philosophy that values \u201ckan\u201d (tranquility). While cherishing the beauty and quietude of Japanese aesthetics, the architecture blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment, expressing the changing seasons.<\/p>\n

From the Edo to Meiji periods, Otaru flourished as a port of call for Kitamae-bune trading ships, leading to the construction of large stone warehouses for storing goods.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Against a historical backdrop of frequent large fires, these stone warehouses\u2014built with fire-resistant soft stone\u2014still vividly retain the atmosphere of their era.<\/p>\n

Inheriting Makoto Nakayama\u2019s philosophy and the history of Otaru\u2019s stone warehouses, the new concept embraces the traditional Japanese notion of \u201ckamosu\u201d (to ferment or mature), an age-old practice of quietly deepening value over time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Key Renovation Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kuramure originally opened on May 9, 2002, and has been operated by Onko Chishin since June 20, 2025.<\/p>\n

While preserving the original design philosophy, the renovation aims to further refine the value of the guest experience. Architect Makoto Nakayama, who oversaw the original design, will also lead the renovation design.<\/p>\n

Enzyme bath image<\/p><\/div>\n

The two existing public baths will be renovated into reservable private baths, each offering an exclusive wellness experience.<\/p>\n

For the first time among Onko Chishin\u2013operated properties, an enzyme bath will be newly introduced.<\/p>\n

In addition, a spa and sauna will be added, providing a stay experience designed to promote circulation and balance through thermal bathing and detoxification.<\/p>\n

About Architect Makoto Nakayama<\/strong><\/h2>\n

An architect born in Hokkaido.<\/p>\n

He has designed numerous luxury residences and accommodation facilities, primarily in Hokkaido, including \u201cZaborin\u201d and \u201cSansui Niseko\u201d in Niseko, \u201cBoro NOGUCHI Noboribetsu\u201d in Noboribetsu, \u201cBoro NOGUCHI Hakodate\u201d in Hakodate, and \u201cRyotei Kuki\u201d in Esashi.<\/p>\n

Influenced by Katsura Imperial Villa and Kyoto architecture, his design philosophy is characterized by a deep sensitivity to Japanese spirituality and meticulous attention to delicate proportions.<\/p>\n
